The Nigerian Capital Market and 2017 Budget: Lessons for 2018.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) held its 2nd Budget Seminar Series to identify how the capital market can contribute to, and in turn benefit from the 2018 Budget (“Budget of Consolidation”) and its implementation. Themed “The Nigerian Capital Market and 2017 Budget: Lessons for 2018”, the APEX Body presented a review of the implementation of the 2017 budget and activities of the capital market so far.

A total of ₦1.55 trillion was raised through the capital market as at September, 2017. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of this was through debt instruments, and of the Twelve percent (12%) balance that was in equity instruments, Four (4) issuers on the NASD OTC raised rights in that period.

The Federal Government has proposed a 2018 Budget of ₦8.6 trillion (up 15.6% from ₦7.29 trillion in 2017). This however, is zero growth when adjusted for inflation.

The Conference adopted a Communiqué that highlighted the need for:

  • timely passage and implementation of the budget
  • consensus on a framework for measuring budget performance
  • synchronized efforts across all arms of Government

We expect that as the Federal Government implements the 2018 Budget, infrastructure that will support private sector growth will be strengthened. NASD will continue to support growth of the Nigerian economy through its trading and enterprise platforms and look forward to an exciting year of mobilizing funds to worthy investments.
